I am working on an ongoing project involving investigations into urban furniture, looking irreverently at the positive qualities of such features and also their ability to define behaviour or stand obsolete. I’m specifically looking at the prominent model of stone bench seen around Sheffield (see images), exploring their formal qualities and locations and usage in relation to their designers’ intentions. The benches positioning across the city hold potential for incidental usage and are suggestive of and follies, bandstands and amphitheatres. I am drawing upon research of these traditional structures and council planning regulations in the creation of photographic works, posters and potential events.
