Over three days six artists collaboratively developed a playful site-specific Treasure Hunt that facilitates new ways of exploring the given space. The funny and socio-politically engaged hunt aims to find new ways to actively engage audiences with contemporary issues, including social practices and the specifics of the local and the global. The use of this recognizable format in contemporary popular culture explores accessibility and interactivity, and allows us to develop the art of cryptic clue writing.
Working within The Newcastle Story at the Discovery Museum, we developed clues that engaged participants in their local context, providing altered perspectives on local history and representations of popular culture and a discerning look at the delivery of local identity through museum displays. The Treasure Hunt was held on the evening of the third night and attracted over fifty participants. The treasure was a collection of accumulated objects offering irreverent takes on local identity.
