the big move.
Exhibition and Event

Roach Road/Psalter Lane Sheffield 2007.

This project took its name from marketing material circulated to promote the then imminent relocation of the BA/MA Fine Art courses to new premises in the city centre, and consisted of both a live event and subsequent participatory exhibition. I co-coordinated and hosted a street party for the residents of the area surrounding the campus, including families, elderly people and students, in celebration of the dynamic of the area. The project’s contextual focus was the wider regenerative agenda of the cultural industries quarter and contested environment surrounding the move, as well as a playful nudge at shifting roles and expectations of artists in relation to site and community, questioning the impact of a guest cultural workers presence in a pre-existing place.

The exhibition showed documentation of the event, whilst guide leaflets lead visitors back out of the building to the street location of the party to converse with one of the party guests, view the panorama of the city below and make their way along individual processions towards the new campus site, allowing for imaginary tangents. Whether physically undertaken or imagined, the processions aimed to playfully allow the viewers to stray from the path of the exhibition.
